Unsubscribe From Unwanted Emails

Tired of a cluttered inbox? You're not alone.

Whether it's newsletters you didn't mean to sign up for, updates from a service you no longer use, or outright spam, unwanted emails can pile up quickly. Fortunately, most modern email platforms make it easy to unsubscribe from these messages — if you know where to look.

In this guide, we'll walk you through the steps to unsubscribe from unwanted emails on popular email providers like Gmail, Yahoo, and Outlook, as well as general tips for other platforms. We'll also cover what to do if an email doesn't include an obvious unsubscribe option.

WARNING:
If an email looks suspicious or is from an unknown sender, don't click on any links — even if it says "unsubscribe". Scammers often use fake unsubscribe buttons to confirm your email is active.

When in doubt, mark the email as spam and delete it.

Gmail often detects unsubscribe links in marketing emails and makes the process very simple:

  • Open the unwanted email.
  • Look for an "Unsubscribe" or "Change preferences" link next to the sender's name at the top.
  • Click "Unsubscribe", then confirm in the popup.
  • If Gmail's unsubscribe button does not show check the instructions below.

Yahoo often detects unsubscribe links in marketing emails and makes the process very simple:

  • Open the unwanted email.
  • At the top-right of the email header, click the three dots (More options).
  • Choose "Unsubscribe" if it appears in the menu.
  • Confirm the action.
  • If Yahoo's unsubscribe button does not show check the instructions below.

Outlook often detects unsubscribe links in marketing emails and makes the process very simple:

  • Open the email from your inbox.
  • If Outlook detects it's a subscription email, you'll see an "Unsubscribe" link at the top, just above the message.
  • Click it, then confirm to stop future messages.
  • If Outlook's unsubscribe button does not show check the instructions below.

For Apple Mail, ProtonMail, Zoho, and others, the interface may not detect unsubscribes automatically. Check the instructions below how to manually find unsubscribe links.

If you're unable to use your email provider's unsubscribe button then unsubscribe to newsletters and marketing emails using the unsubscribe button in their email:

  • Open the unwanted email.
  • Scroll down to the footer — the unsubscribe link is usually small and in grey text.
  • Click the link and follow any instructions (some will confirm immediately, others will ask you to select preferences).
  • Sometimes unsubscribe links may be hard to find
    - Hidden in plain sight: Look for phrases like "To unsubscribe, click here" or "Manage your preferences."
    - Disguised: Look for tiny fonts or hidden colors
    - Embedded in images or icons: Some emails use small buttons or logos instead of text — hover over them to see if the URL says anything about unsubscribing.
